Grunge Style Grows Up

The iconic 90’s look gets a 21st Century update...

Lace DressTo paraphrase Saturday Night Live: Hey, Remember the 90’s? This spring, upstart designers are looking to their youth, and established brands return to their heyday to create a decidedly more stylish take on grunge. Think luxe volume mixed with lingerie details, or a shrunken flannel with a tailored short. Rock these past favorites with sophistication for a chic combo of nostalgia and now-ness.

Nothing screams “grunge” like a flannel shirt. Gone are the days of knee-length tents in oversized plaid. Oh, no: we are in an era of a smart, shrunken layer that dresses up or down. Another update? Shapeless babydolls are replaced by flattering, waist cinching cocktail and day pieces.

You’ve left your Riot Grrrl style in the past, but miss the sexy lingerie and vintage pieces rocked by the 90’s style stars? Lace dominated the runways, with retro details like Peter Pan collars. Pair a lacy blouse with a blazer look, and opt for a red lip, or grown up boot, for a touch of grunge inspired humor for work.

Love the rebellious feel of a shredded piece? We’re over cut-offs, but deconstructed details like open weave knit or insets give a hint of edge without veering to angst.

We all love looking to our own pasts for some fashion experimentation, let’s relive the 90’s with a bit more chic in ‘grown-up’ grunge.
